We are living in a time where social media is all around us. Things like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and many others are everywhere. Even this discussion topic here on Canvas could be considered social media. We keep hearing about the dangers of online predators, or hacking, identity theft, or things like that. What we don't hear much about is people losing the ability to communicate face to face anymore. People (especially young people) are not developing the social skills they need in the real world. There is too much online communication and not enough personal interaction.
What do you consider to be the major benefits of social media? What are the good things about being exposed to global news? Are we more informed about social issues these days? How can you avoid the pitfalls of living life through a computer screen (or phone screen) and get out there and live life? What does social media mean to you?

Social media offers numerous benefits, including the ability to connect with friends and family across the globe, share ideas, and access a wealth of information instantly. It has democratized the flow of information, allowing us to stay informed about global news and social issues, often in real-time. This exposure can foster awareness and empathy for diverse perspectives, encouraging social activism and community engagement. However, to avoid the pitfalls of excessive screen time and diminished face-to-face communication, it's essential to set boundaries, prioritize in-person interactions, and engage in activities that promote real-world connections. For me, social media serves as a tool for connection and learning, but I recognize the importance of balancing it with meaningful, offline experiences that enrich my life and relationships.
